Among a sea of young faces, eighty-year-old Maria's expectant smile stood out. Although the El Salvador Literacy Program mainly serves youth, it is not uncommon to find parents and grandparents among the students.

Celebration of Nebraska Books

Nebraska Center for the Book

The celebration is open to the public and will include a program by Dr. Joseph J. Wydeven on The Home Place by Wright Morris, the 2010 One Book One Nebraska selection. One Book One Nebraska is a statewide reading program encouraging all Nebraskans to read and talk about the same book. Throughout 2010, Nebraskans have been reading, discussing and learning about Wright Morris, The Home Place, and the interaction between photo and text. 2010 One Book One Nebraska is hosted by the Lone Tree Literary Society and is sponsored by the Nebraska Center for the Book, Nebraska Humanities Council, Nebraska Library Association, Nebraska Library Commission, and the University of Nebraska Press. Public nominations for the 2011 One Book One Nebraska were submitted in June and July.

"From a Distance"- First Friday at the Grand Manse

The Grand Manse Gallery proudly presents "From a Distance", pastel paintings by Jennifer Homan. A breathtaking, colorful collection of observations depicting the presence of life (human and otherwise) on the Great Plains. Homan has been awarded honors at both state and national juried exhibits and has earned an associate membership in the prestigious Pastel Society of America. Jennifer hopes viewers will take notice of the true beauty our Great Plains have to offer as they travel from painting to painting.

Small Treasures, Juried Artist Member Exhibition

Nov. 18 - Dec. 24 the Haydon Art Center will be hosting "Small Treasures" our Annual Artist Members Juried Exhibition. Jured by Julie Farstad, Assistant Professor of Painting at Kansas City Art Institute.

Artwork by 38 artists. All work is under 18" and below $500.

Gallery Talk: Elizabeth Ingraham

Thursday, November 11 from 4-5:00 at Haydon Art Center artist Elizabeth Ingraham will be discussing her installation pieces “Locator Map” & “Terrain Squares” which are currently featured in the Haydon Art Center’s exhibition “Stitch: Modern Embroidery”.

Ingraham has used topographic software, dividing Nebraska into an eccentric grid. For over a year, she drew the physical features of these gridded sections—every town, every city, every railroad, every park, every river, every lake, every creek. This drawing has become a 15 foot by 7 foot Locator Map that shows the state as a whole. She has then translated the topographic terrain into stitched relief.
