Shelley Thornton is a lifelong artist who has lived all but 4 of her 68 years in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she was born, raised, and educated, and where she chose to have her own family and bring up her remarkable son and daughter. She earned a BFA from the University of Nebraska in 1973, majoring in printmaking. For the most part, she has been a self-employed artist of various endeavors, including graphic design, clothing design and construction, toy-making, quilt-making, animation, and a 20-year illustration career. Since 1993, she has focused her artistic expression on making one-of- a-kind textile art dolls with needle-sculpted, embroidered faces, wooden ball joints, and her signature-style stuffed cloth hair. They are meticulously costumed, using an unexpected juxtaposition of beautiful textiles, making collages of patterns and colors. She was elected into the prestigious National Institute of American Doll Artists in 1995, and is known internationally for her work.
