The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel Seeks Next Great Artist to Serve as Hotel’s Second Artist in Residence

Nebraska’s #1 hotel now accepting applications for its Spring 2017 Artist in Residence

Lincoln, Neb., October 11, 2016. . . . . Building on the success of its first Artist-in-Residence program, The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel, majority owned and managed by Marcus Hotels & Resorts, is now accepting applications for its second Artist in Residence. Artists interested in beginning a year-long residency starting April 1, 2017, can now apply.

Entering its second year, The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel’s Artist-in-Residence program features a working art studio and gallery that is open to hotel guests and the public.  The program encourages visitors to interact with the resident artist, while watching the evolution of each piece of work firsthand.  The next artist, succeeding encaustic painter Margaret Berry, will move into the studio space April 1, 2017, and will continue working at the hotel for a one-year period.

“We are very excited to continue our Artist-in-Residence program for the second year.  Margaret’s charisma and expertise allowed guests to learn about her excellent works and the local art culture.  We look forward to meeting the next great artist and watching his or her work come to life,” said Susan Madsen, general manager of The Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel.

During the year of residency, the chosen artist will spend 30 hours a week at the hotel, creating pieces, hosting gallery nights and networking with guests to create a truly enriching experience for travelers. In addition to the space and exposure opportunities, the artist receives a $1,000 monthly stipend, complimentary meals in the hotel’s cafeteria and up to $3,000 for entertaining potential buyers and planning workshops or events. At the end of the residency, a legacy piece will be created for permanent display within the hotel.

“Serving as the Cornhusker Hotel’s first artist has taught me to be flexible, leverage viewer reactions into thoughtful conversations and welcome everyone to experience something new through my work,” reflects Margaret Berry, current artist at The Cornhusker. “As the Artist in Residence, I enjoy being in the center of so many activities, events and gatherings held at the hotel with so many different people. It’s a privilege to meet amazing guests, conference attendees, hardworking associates and community folks who visit and appreciate my art.”

The deadline to apply for the program is December 1, 2016.  Six applicants will be selected by The Cornhusker Artist-in-Residence board members as finalists to interview, display their works in a public finalist gallery and potentially become the hotel’s second Artist in Residence. A link to the application can be found on The Cornhusker’swebsite, with details on the program and requirements of potential artists. The program is open to artists of all media from any location. For questions about the application or process, email ArtistInResidence@TheCornhusker.com.

The Artist-in-Residence program was created by Marcus Hotels & Resorts in 2009 at The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee, Wis. The program encourages the public and guests to interact with a local artist, enriching the overall guest experience during their visit as they are able to connect with the artist and see the evolution of the pieces created. The program has gained national recognition, being noted as the latest trend in amenities offered by hotels.
