Oscar Rios Pohirieth
Oscar Rios Pohirieth is from Veracruz, Mexico. When he was a young boy he learned about Andean Folk music from a family from South America that moved next door. Hardly anyone had ever heard Andean music before and Oscar fell in love with its mystical and beautiful sounds. He absorbed as much as he could from his neighbors from Chile and when they moved back home they left him with some instruments so he could practice. Oscar continued to teach himself how to play many different Andean instruments such as the quena, quenacho, panpipes, the charango, bombo and chajchas. He moved to the United States when he was nineteen years old to study English. Here, he found other Andean musicians and decided to form a band, Kusi Taki so that others could learn about Andean culture. Oscar is also an artist on the Nebraska Artist Directory that travels to schools and teaches traditional and contemporary Andean folk music. To contact Oscar Rios Pohirieth for a concert or private party you can email him at opohir@lps.org or to listen to some of his band's music at www.kusitaki.com
