Tour de Lincoln - Where are they now?

Tour de LincolnIt’s been a little over 8 and a half years since the bicycles of Tour de Lincoln descended on our community. Wondering what’s become of them in that time? Well, many were sold into private hands as a result of the auction on October 3, 2003, that resulted in approximately $425,000 being raised for the artists, arts organizations around town, and the Lincoln Arts Council. The new owners of the bike sculptures have done the same sort of things that other art owners do with their artwork. A few end up in storage for a time. Some are in private dwellings for their owners to enjoy. Some are put out where anyone can enjoy them.

No doubt you’ve seen a few here and there around town, but it’s quite the feat to find them all. In fact, we didn’t know what had happened to many of them. And that’s where Bonnie Kucera came in. Earlier this year, she came to our office looking for something to do with her grandson, and thought that visiting all the Tour de Lincoln bikes was a great idea. We thought so too, but could only provide her with a small list of what we collectively knew. But Bonnie was undeterred. She decided she would volunteer her time and find out where they all were. Over the next few months, she made calls and visited locations all over town, tracking them down one by one. Finally this summer, she called us back to let us know she had found the 72nd and last bike, and presented us with the list below.

We just want to give our heartfelt thanks to Bonnie for taking the time and effort to compile this great list. It just goes to show what can happen when the power of art and a determined mindset can accomplish.
