Uma Mazour

Uma MazourUma has been in the United States since the 1960's. She came here for her husbands schooling and job. Uma is a painter of water color and oil paintings. She loves color and she has the gift of being able to look at an object she is painting and be able with ease to mix the right colors to portray it. At the age of five she started painting and was the only one of nine children to have an interest in art, so she considers this to be a gift from God. Most of the people from India in Lincoln are of the Hindu faith. In her home Uma has many figures of deities. All of the arts are considered sacred and an expression of worship and thanks to God.

She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree while in India. While in high school she majored in art and won many awards. Uma is currently a VISTA worker, but when her service is finished she plans to work to create and sell more paintings. She has belonged to the Lincoln Artists Guild in the past and has exhibited some, but is hoping to get more active with it again.

As a child she received a lot of encouragement to make art. The many beautiful flowers in her country were an inspiration and she still does paintings of flowers now. No matter what she has always kept painting throughout her life.

She learned watercolor painting by taking classes on how to paint what she calls "water wash painting". It's a process by which the paints are applied in layers. After a layer is done the paper is soaked in water and then the next layer is applied. It produces a lush painting with a lot of depth due to how deep into the paper the layers go. This is a technique that has been used for hundreds of years.

In addition to being an artist Uma studied architecture at Southeast Community College. She has designed a home and worked with a building to design a home for a friend and the home is in Northwest Lincoln. She has two grown sons who are Doctors and four grandchildren.

You can see Uma's beautiful paintings on her website: oil and watercolor.com and you may contact her by emailing her at butterflymazour@hotmail.com.
