Artist Bio

I began my career in jewelry design and manufacture by first learning the art of lapidary. After cutting many stones, I became interested in setting the stones and began working in silver. As my interest in working with fine gemstones increased, I developed the skill necessary to work in other precious metals. My work is a product of over 40 years of development and experience. I am primarily self-taught; reading books, attending workshops and collaboratively learning with jewelry colleagues. I have shown my work in galleries, participated in art shows/fairs throughout the country and won numerous awards. Most recently, I received Best of Show at Midland MI in June 2014, First Place in Jewelry at Oakbrook IL in May 2014 and Award of Excellence in 3D at Geneva IL in July 2014.

Artist Statement

I work primarily in 14K gold. My work is a mixture of fabrication, various casting techniques and lapidary. All waxes and castings are done by me and most are one of a kind or variations on a design. The vast majority of fabricated pieces are one of a kind with a limited number of simple bezels. I do all of my own stone cutting for the inlay pieces and some of the free form cabochon cuts. The cutting I do with unusual gemstones focuses on the natural characteristics, textures and unique features of the stones. Each piece is created in my studio in Dexter, MI, with the help of two part time assistants. They help with some of the casting clean-up and preparation for stone setting, various steps in the fabrication process, and the final clean- up/polish.
