Business: Tahmi - the art of woven metal
From: Fairfield, IA
Tahmi is a self-taught, award winning artist from Fairfield, IA. She creates contemporary jewelry by replicating traditional textile techniques in precious metals. Recently Tahmi has been entranced with the optical properties of glass. For her most recent lines of jewelry, she weaves fabric from wire, then embeds the woven metal fabric behind layers of fused glass, allowing the glass to alternately magnify or distort the view of the underlying weave.
Using a medieval finger weaving technique, I weave fabric from precious metal wire, then embed that precious metal fabric behind layers of clear glass I've fused in order to play with various optical effects in my jewelry. It's hard to capture in a still image, but the result is very dynamic as light interacts with both the glass and the twists in the precious metal fabric. I then add hand fabricated chain and settings to finish my award winning pieces
