I am from a line of midwestern, small town craftspeople, and the practical humility of daily work informs the creation and exhibition of my ceramic art. As a Nebraskan I reflect the direct, unpretentious presentation of images to the viewer, and create durable, tactile pieces for everyday life.
I use stoneware and porcelain to construct gestural, geologic work that utilizes texture and varied surface finishes to evoke topographic and cartographic imagery. I often use the vessel as the skeleton upon which naturalistic texture, industrial markings, or a thick slip is applied. I build the feet, handles, and spouts to resemble lithic structures, finish the surface with multiple stains and glazes to emphasize the contrasting surfaces. All pieces are fired in oxidation to cone 6.
