Thanks to the resumption of Arts in Schools and Communities funding from the Nebraska Arts Council, LAC has returned to the Pathfinder School at the Lancaster County Youth Detention Center. Starting today, Nancy Konrardy will offer an intensive five-week residency with incarcerated youth.
We have been at Pathfinder for over a decade, and the work there has been transformative for the children. The approach to the artwork is process-oriented and geared toward social-emotional learning, all while exploring creativity. Our program has broken through barriers with many students, helping them process trauma and understand themselves better, their life situation, and the world they live in.
The work has become a lifeline in many ways, and the students look forward to it. The program has built pride, confidence, an interest in learning, and community within the pods, all in a way that only the creative process can bring out.
Nancy received an award at the 2024 National Conference on Juvenile Justice for her Pathfinder work, where she presented a session on using art as a model for rehabilitation.
We also offer music instruction with Daniel Martinez, who will return to Pathfinder this summer.
