Opening prison doors: a special night inside for inmates and their children

For the second year, incarcerated dads had the opportunity to make art and music together with their children in a special evening at the Lancaster County Penitentiary. For two hours last night, more than 20 kids laughed and shared time with their dads, not in a visiting room, but in a space set up for fun and sharing.

Together, the kids — ranging in age from 3 to 16 — painted an evening sky with the words ‘Good night’ followed by their names, which they then took home to hang above their beds so that they could share a memory of their dads each night, and say good night. They also did printmaking and sang and danced together.

Thank you to Christian Heritage’s Beyond Prison program for bringing us in as partners on the meaningful project.
